Conclusion

Blue light also known as High Energy Visible Light (HEV) is a short wavelength that produces high amounts of energy ranging from 380-500 nanometers. It is scientifically proven that Blue light causes skin damage including hyperpigmentation, inflammation, photo-aging (skin wrinkling & sagging) and it induces oxidative stress and the weakening of skin surface. Sources of blue light mainly include indoor lightning and the light emitted by your screens (phone, laptops, TV). I’m a strong believer that those with darker skin react to indoor lighting.

Blue light is able to penetrate deeper into the skin compared with UVA & UVB. Some studies even suggest that blue light is also more active in inducing skin pigmentation than UVA. For someone dealing with melasma/pigment issues, a sunscreen that offers blue light protection is vital. Dermatologists typically recommend sunscreens that contain iron oxide for blue light protection however they tend to leave an orange/yellow tint on skin.

Most sunscreens on the market do not offer blue light protection so I was excited to hear about the Crystal Tomato Beyond Sun Protection sunblock. Be on the lookout for any brands that claim that their sunscreens offer blue light protection without actual testing.

Pigmentation and melasma is extremely common in Singapore. The founder of the brand, Catherine Tan formulated Crystal Tomato® Whitening Supplements due to her own battle with pigment issues. Her product has helped many people achieved fairer, more even toned skin. She noticed that the market does not have any sunblock to protect one against the harmful effects of blue light and embarked on a 5-year journey to formulate this sunscreen that’s been clinically proven to offer 54.1% protection against blue light. Her range is carried by numerous highly regarded dermatologists/plastic surgeons/aesthetic physicians in the region.

We’ve used the sunscreen for over 12 weeks on different skin types and were really very impressed with the overall texture and protection it offered. It has a light, cloudy texture and dries down to a beautiful matte finish. And it’s safe for those with acne/oily prone skin. Reapplications were also easy, the product doesn’t clump or have that dreadful white cast.

Most SPFs on the market are SPF 30/50 formulas. This sunscreen has a whopping SPF value of 75 but has been tested (in vivo tests) to return a remarkable result of SPF 79.7! And with a PPD rating of 17+, Beyond Sun Protection’s PA++++ has the highest rating possible. This lightweight but powerful sunscreen is especially perfect for use in humid countries.

While the sunscreen does have a high price point, you’re truly paying for a product that’s been clinically evaluated to be efficacious and effective. If you have melasma/pigment issues and want a light sunscreen that will help protect and also gradually lighten your skin, this one comes highly recommended!
