6 Tips for Men’s Home Haircuts

Barber shops around the country have been closed for weeks now. And if you’re a person with short hair, it might be time to take matters into your own hands. But before you start snipping, read this first. We’re sharing our top tips for men’s home haircuts, and easy men’s haircuts you can try at home. And who knows? Maybe you’ll discover a new talent!

1. Use the Right Tools

A quick word of warning: do not use any tools from your kitchen on your hair. Yes, technically your kitchen shears are scissors, but they’re not the right kind of scissors for your hair. And the same goes for clippers! Using a beard trimmer on your scalp is sure to have disastrous consequences.

If you’re serious about cutting your own hair, then your first step will be to purchase real hair scissors or clippers online.

2. Use Two Mirrors

If you’re cutting your own hair, you’ll need two mirrors: a wall-mounted mirror (like your medicine cabinet) and a handheld mirror to see the back of your head.

3. Prep Your Space (and Yourself)

We recommend choosing a well-lit place to cut your hair, like your bathroom. Lay down a sheet to catch the trimmings, or make sure you have a vacuum on hand to clean up afterwards. Typically your barber will give you a smock to protect your clothes from all those itchy trimmings. But if you don’t have a smock on hand, you can simply cut your hair sans shirt. Then make sure to dampen your hair before cutting.

4. Start Small

Remember: you can always take more off, but you can’t put it back on. Cut a little bit at a time to avoid a too-short look.

5. Fill in the Gaps

If you mess up and take a little bit too much off – don’t panic. All you need to do to cover a home haircut mishap is apply a little bit of Toppik Hair Building Fibers using the Spray Applicator. Pat the Fibers into place, then apply a mist of FiberHold Spray for extra shine and staying power.

6. Choose a Style

Be a man with a plan and choose one of these men’s home haircuts before you pick up the clippers.

If you like your hair extra short, there is no easier way to cut your own hair. All you need is clippers! Set them to a 3 or 4 level and trim all of your hair. You can always go shorter on a second pass.

This retro haircut is also easy to do yourself. Just use scissors to carefully trim around the ears and along the neck to keep this look from getting too messy.

Classic Fade

This look is slightly more advanced, so we recommend it for people who feel confident in their at-home hair cutting skills:

  • Start by using clips to section the hair, creating a line from the temple area to the back of the head.
  • Use clippers to trim the sides, starting with the hair in front of your ears and working your way back.

Then move to the back of your head, using a handheld mirror to see what you’re doing.

  • To create a fade, put the clippers onto a shorter setting, and trim hair halfway up the sides and back. “Flick” the clippers away from your head to blend the two lengths.
  • Remove the clips, then cut the top part of your hair using scissors.
